Former Graduate Student

Dr. Suraj Mullurkara

Dr. Mullurkara received his B.Tech and M.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh with a thesis entitled “Soft magnetic Ferrites and Metal-Ferrite Nanocomposites for Power Electronic Applications.” He was the first PhD student to join the group in the area of magnetic materials research, and established a new design pathway for soft magnetic metal and ferrite nanocomposites targeting previously unrealized combinations of saturation flux density and high frequency performance. His research combined experimental synthesis and detailed characterization, including neutron diffraction and first order reversal curve magnetometry, with thermodynamic and micromagnetic modelling. His work was supported by the Office of Naval Research, DARPA, and the AMPED consortium, with industry partners including CorePower Magnetics and Fastwatt LLC.
